Surprise! Consumer Electronics Company Creates Weather Model.

At this time there are many private organizations duplicating and and ultimately improving upon weather data traditionally supplied by the government agency, NOAA, by creating their own methods by which to improve and disseminate nowcasts and forecasts. These improvements range anywhere from the Panasonic “our model is better than yours” announcement today, to a stateside private company who will provide extremely precise satellite data from their own satellite imaging system in the not-so-distant future. Now, the key to all of this is that the information being created only augments NOAA’s existing data, it does not replace it and it’s equally important to point out that the private weather industry would simply not exist if it weren’t for the data provided to them by the government through NOAA.

While I’m unsure of Panasonic’s plan for pricing and selling their model once it’s ready for primetime, a similar business model would be that of the The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). This organization charges upwards of a quarter million dollars per year to organizations for internal use and tightly-guarded redistribution.

It will be interesting to learn what Panasonic is up to and see if they can enter a tight market at a competitive price point. The organization behind the ECMWF has been in existence for over 40 years. It is staffed by 300 employees. Panasonic's support group appears to be much smaller and the model they have revealed is only a few years in the making.

Big splash though today. As I said, it'll be interesting.

Social media is your new resume, dummy.

The resume is a formality and will likely always be a part of the introduction process for potential employees and hiring managers. But it doesn't stop there.

Employers worth their salt will nearly always check multiple sources of information prior to making a hiring decision and social media is a solid start every time. Sure, you've provided references but they mean nothing because those of us in a hiring position were once hired ourselves and know that you won't list the people you have worked with who hate you (unless you're my sister-in-law).

The top social brands and sharing sites are where hiring managers start, but digging deeper can help tell your full story. Scary, eh?

The top social brands and sharing sites are where hiring managers start, but digging deeper can help tell your full story. Scary, eh?

Employers no doubt stalk your personal social media accounts. I can honestly say I seek out as much information as possible about a candidate during my consideration. Social media is a true look at your personality and personal life, both of which can help me create an opinion about your capability to perform. Is this fair? Absolutely! I don't have the time or patience to wait for your true colors to shine in an office setting. 10 minutes with your online presence and I know everything I need to know to make an educated decision. Trust me.

So, next time you consider posting something inappropriate, think twice because your presence online can cost you the job.

Strayhorn Marina Damage 12/28/15

A look at weather during the 4am hour at Strayhorn Marina on Lake Tenkiller in Oklahoma which sustained the damage pictured below on Dec 28th:

Below is a map produced by Weather Decision Technologies indicating wind speeds at the location were around 35mph with no notable peaks or valleys in the cycle.

Here is a look at the nearest Oklahoma Mesonet location. Aside from the anomaly at approx 6am where wind spiked at the same time a pressure drop occurred, nothing of interest happened:

And here are INX radar loops from the span of time damage may have occurred (Ft. Smith radar data unavailable):
Base Reflectivity
Storm Relative Velocity
There are no notable signatures that indicate excessive wind would have occurred at the location during the time period given. There were also no severe reports from anywhere in Oklahoma during the 24-hour period.

A possible cause of damage:

Without proof of localized extreme weather in the area of Lake Tenkiller or the marina location itself, looking at a different cause is necessary. The logical reasoning for damage from a data standpoint is that water began an exponential rise during the period. This would have lifted the docks and potentially lifted marina anchors allowing the docks to move in 35mph winds.

It is completely possible for docks to move and then return to the general location where they were previously positioned. This all depends on slack in the cables, amount of weight holding the floating structures, and sustained/gusts of winds that occurred while docks were "loose".
This explains the lack of peeling of sheetmetal roofing and why ramps to the docks all sustained damage. This does not explain damage to the ship store but a better view of this damage would be needed to determine if it was wind-related or structure impact-related.

Central Park Colors - 2015

Was lucky enough to visit Central Park this year during the peak of fall foliage. Plenty of incredible colors throughout, highlighted by street performers and plenty of people watching.

Four inches of rain is on the way to Oklahoma

Someone is gonna see four inches of rain (or more) in Oklahoma between late Wednesday and Saturday. This is very welcome news as wildfire potential is on an upswing at the moment and drought is creeping back into the state:

Below are some self explanatory maps regarding the rain anticipated over the next few days. These maps indicate total rainfall for the period:

Bringing blogging back

Sure, social media still has a grip on business but questionable advertising practices as well as platforms restricting the access of brands to their own followers has turned off many marketers.
